Study Permit Requirements for Canada
Overview
A Canadian study permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. To obtain a study permit, applicants must meet specific requirements and follow a defined application process. This page outlines the essential criteria and steps to help you navigate the application process successfully.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a study permit, you must:
Acceptance by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- You must have a letter of acceptance from a DLI in Canada. A DLI is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students.
Proof of Financial Support
- You need to provide proof that you have sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada, and return transportation costs. The minimum amount required depends on the number of family members accompanying you and the location of your DLI in Canada.
No Criminal Record
- Applicants must provide a police certificate to demonstrate that they have no criminal record and pose no threat to Canadian society. This may include undergoing a background check.
Medical Examination
- You may need to undergo a medical exam to show that you are in good health and do not pose a health risk to Canadians. This requirement depends on your country of residence and the length of your stay in Canada.
Intent to Leave Canada
- You must prove to an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires. This involves demonstrating ties to your home country, such as family, employment, or property.
Language Proficiency
- While not a requirement for the study permit itself, many DLIs require proof of language proficiency (English or French) for admission. Accepted tests include IELTS, TOEFL, and TEF.
Required Documents
When applying for a study permit, you will need to provide the following documents:
Letter of Acceptance
- From a DLI in Canada, including details about the program, start and end dates, and tuition fees.
Proof of Identity
- A valid passport or travel document for yourself and any family members accompanying you to Canada.
Proof of Financial Support
- Documents such as bank statements, proof of a Canadian bank account in your name if money has been transferred to Canada, proof of payment of tuition and accommodation fees, a letter from a person or institution providing you with money, or proof of funding paid from within Canada (if you have a scholarship or are in a Canadian-funded educational program).
Letter of Explanation
- An optional document that explains why you want to study in Canada and that you understand your responsibilities as a student.
Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ)
- If you plan to study in Quebec, you will need a CAQ issued by the Quebec government.
Custodian Declaration (for minors)
- If you are a minor and coming to Canada without a parent or legal guardian, you will need to provide a custodian declaration form.
Police Certificates
- To demonstrate that you have no criminal record.
Medical Exam Results
- If applicable, based on your country of residence or length of stay in Canada.
Application Process
Prepare Your Application
- Gather all required documents and ensure they meet the IRCC guidelines.
Apply Online
- Create an account on the IRCC website and complete the application form. Upload your documents and pay the application fee.
Submit Biometrics
- After submitting your application, you may receive a request to provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo). You must complete this step at a designated biometric collection site.
Wait for Processing
- Processing times vary depending on your country of residence and the volume of applications. Check the IRCC website for current processing times.
Receive Decision
- If your application is approved, you will receive a port of entry (POE) letter of introduction. If you are from a country that requires a visa, you will also receive a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
Travel to Canada
- Present your POE letter of introduction and other required documents to a border services officer upon arrival in Canada. The officer will issue your study permit at the port of entry.
